Trent Alexander-Arnold was officially unveiled as a Real Madrid signing at Real Madrid City today. This comes after he left his boyhood club, Liverpool, on a free transfer—although Liverpool did receive a "compensation fee" in the amount of £10m due to Madrid signing him before the expiration of his contract. However the fee is definitely not up to half the money, Liverpool would have sold him for.
A quick recap: Trent had announced he was leaving Liverpool after 20 years at the club. However, despite it being his boyhood club, he was willing to leave for free and sign for Madrid.He also refused to talk about his future till the end of the season sending mixed signals to the fans despite being in active negotiations with Madrid.This sparked numerous theories among Liverpool fans. Some claimed he had been planning to run down his contract ever since signing a new deal in 2021, while others suggested he had been plotting to leave on a free transfer since 2023, despite serving as vice-captain.
Well, it turns out one of those theories might actually be right. The most shocking revelation came during Trent’s unveiling speech, which he delivered in full-blown Spanish—without stammering. Even Real Madrid board members appeared visibly surprised. Of course, you don’t learn a whole new language in just a few weeks—which, coincidentally, is around the time he announced he was leaving Liverpool.
In the video posted on Real Madrid’s official X page, he thanked Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez for the opportunity to join the club. He also made it clear that he was there to win titles.
Later, at the press conference, Trent seemed to confirm suspicions that he had been planning this move for some time. When asked about it, he said: “I have been waiting for a long time for this—by a long time, I mean a few weeks.”
Well, it’s no wonder Liverpool fans’ heads are in the clouds (or on Mars), and their frustration is valid— especially after the video of him speaking fluent Spanish made the rounds on the internet.
