We Will Make Agriculture the Core Driver of Ghana's Economic Transformation – Prez Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has made a bold declaration: agriculture will be the engine of Ghana’s economic transformation under his leadership if elected in 2024. Speaking to farmers, agribusiness players, and youth groups, Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s future prosperity hinges on revitalizing the agricultural sector.

“Agriculture is not just an occupation — it’s our heritage and our economic lifeline,” he said. “We will build a strong, modern agricultural economy that creates jobs, feeds our people, and fuels industrial growth.”

Mahama’s plan focuses on practical, people-centered solutions: expanding irrigation, improving access to financing, boosting agro-processing, and promoting modern farming techniques. He stressed the need to support both smallholder farmers and large-scale agribusinesses with tools, training, and technology.

One of his most compelling points was the need to process what Ghana grows. “We can’t keep exporting raw cocoa while importing chocolate,” he noted. “We will create local industries that add value, reduce post-harvest losses, and build wealth in rural communities.”

He also pledged to make agriculture appealing to the youth by encouraging tech-driven agribusiness and ensuring farming becomes a profitable, respected career choice. Regional agricultural hubs, Mahama explained, will provide tailored support to farmers across the country — from inputs and training to market access.

The former president’s vision taps into a growing national sentiment: the need to reduce reliance on imports, especially food, and invest in what Ghana does best — grow. In a time of global uncertainty and rising costs, strengthening local food systems is not just smart; it’s necessary.

As 2024 elections draw nearer, Mahama’s focus on agriculture could resonate strongly with voters, especially in rural areas. It’s a vision that blends tradition with innovation — and places the power of transformation back into the hands of Ghanaian farmers.

Stay tuned — agriculture just might be the game-changer Ghana has been waiting for.
