Senior Management of Ghana EXIM Bank Donates GHS 450,000 to ‘Mahama Cares’ Programme

Senior executives of Ghana EXIM Bank have made a significant voluntary contribution of GHS 450,000 toward the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, popularly known as the “Mahama Cares” initiative  . This marks the first tranche of what the bank’s leadership describes as a broader commitment to support Ghana’s healthcare objectives.

The donation was spearheaded by EXIM Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Sylvester A. Mensah, a former head of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), who led the executive team in presenting the funds to the Trust Fund  . Announcing the donation on social media on June 11, 2025, Mr. Mensah expressed deep optimism that this contribution would play a meaningful role in making specialist treatments more affordable and accessible to all Ghanaians  .

Launched by President John Dramani Mahama in April 2025, the Mahama Cares programme was established to bolster financial support for individuals suffering from chronic and life-threatening conditions, including cancer, stroke, cardiovascular disease, and kidney failure  . The initiative complements the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by closing the gap for costly treatments often out of reach for many households. According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular illnesses account for around 90% of chronic spending in Ghana, with cancer representing about 5%—many of which are treatable if access and affordability improve  .

Mr. Mensah stated, “This programme is a compassionate effort geared towards expanding access to healthcare, and I am proud of the empathy shown by the senior management team here at EXIM.”  He further voiced confidence that corporate Ghana will rally behind the programme, reinforcing a collective sense of national responsibility.

The Mahama Cares fund has already received high-profile endorsements: President Mahama kick‑started the initiative by donating six months of his salary, followed by four months from Vice‑President Jane Naana Opoku‑Agyeman and a month each from the Ghana Armed Forces’ service commanders  .

The GHS 450,000 pledge by EXIM Bank’s senior management highlights the growing trend of corporate philanthropy in Ghana’s health sector. It reinforces the crucial role of public–private partnerships in creating a compassionate, resilient, and inclusive healthcare system.

As the Mahama Cares programme gains momentum, contributions like this one are vital to its mission: ensuring that no Ghanaian dies for lack of treatment. With business leaders and citizens uniting, the initiative offers renewed hope and tangible impact across the nation.
