Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson might be on the move to La Liga side Atlético Madrid, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
The 31-year-old, who joined Liverpool in 2017 for a reported £8 million fee, is one half of the iconic full-back duo with Trent Alexander-Arnold, together known for the most assists by a defensive pairing. He has been solid at the back for over seven years, winning the Champions League, two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and the Community Shield.
However, at 31, Robertson knows he may no longer get regular game time—especially with the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth. Despite being highly rated by Liverpool, "Robo," as he is fondly called by fans, is reportedly open to the move. When asked about Kerkez's transfer to Liverpool, given that they play in the same position, he acknowledged that age was catching up with him and that he might not be the same player he once was. This rings somewhat true, as he made a few notable and costly mistakes this season.
With Robo probably on the move, Liverpool would be losing the second half of their renowned full-back duo, as Trent Alexander-Arnold has already completed his permanent move away from Anfield. But of course, the one who likely left with his head held high—and hopefully without having to learn Spanish—is Robertson.
Everyone at Liverpool likely understands the position of a veteran full-back who doesn't want to be relegated to the bench in favor of a younger player. While his experience could still be valuable for the squad, the club seems ready to rebuild. With Jeremie Frimpong already signed as Trent’s replacement and Kerkez on his way, Arne Slot appears to be shaping his own version of the team. As for Robertson, he would get enough gane time at Athletico as he is preferred to their other target Thoe Hernandez. Hopefully Liverpool lets him leave for everything thing he has done for the club. And even though I am not a not Liverpool, sincerely rooting for him . A top guy. Good luck Robertson YNWA. And hopefully don't speak Spanish.
