Thomas Partey Addresses Rumours of Captaincy Rift in Black Stars Camp

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has broken his silence on ongoing rumours suggesting a rift within the Black Stars camp over the team's captaincy. The speculation, which has been circulating in local and international media, hinted at growing tensions between Partey and current team captain André Ayew, following the midfielder’s limited involvement in recent national assignments.

Speaking during a press briefing ahead of Ghana’s next international fixture, Partey dismissed the rumours as "completely false" and reaffirmed his commitment to unity within the national team. “There is no problem between me and André or any other player,” Partey stated. “We all play for one purpose — to represent Ghana and make our country proud. The issue of captaincy has never been a problem for me.”

Partey, who has occasionally captained the team in Ayew’s absence, emphasized that leadership in the Black Stars goes beyond who wears the armband. “Whether you are captain or not, everyone has a responsibility to lead by example and support each other,” he explained. “We are a team. We fight together, we win together, and we lose together.”

The rumours began to intensify after Partey missed several key games due to injury, during which time other senior players, including Jordan Ayew and Daniel Amartey, reportedly stepped up in leadership roles. Some media outlets interpreted this shift as a sign of internal conflict or a power struggle — claims Partey firmly denied.

Ghana's football authorities have also weighed in, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) releasing a statement earlier in the week urging the public and media to refrain from spreading unverified information that could disrupt team cohesion.

As the Black Stars prepare for crucial qualifiers ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup, Partey stressed the importance of focus and unity. “We need all the support we can get, both from each other and from Ghanaians everywhere. This is not the time for distractions.”

With Partey’s clarification, fans and pundits alike will be hoping the team can now turn their attention fully to performance on the pitch.
