Ken Agyapong's Argument Against Bawumia Not Tenable – Nana Akomea

Nana Akomea, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Managing Director of the State Transport Company (STC), has pushed back against recent criticisms leveled by Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. According to Akomea, Agyapong’s argument that Bawumia should not be held up as the party's best candidate due to the current economic difficulties is not tenable.

In a media interview, Nana Akomea argued that blaming Bawumia for the country’s economic challenges oversimplifies the complex nature of national governance. “Dr. Bawumia is the Vice President, and while he chairs the Economic Management Team, ultimate decisions are taken collectively by Cabinet and led by the President. It is therefore unfair to single him out for blame,” he stated.

Akomea further pointed out that Dr. Bawumia has contributed significantly to digitizing the Ghanaian economy, citing initiatives like the Ghana Card integration, digital property addressing system, mobile money interoperability, and reforms in the port and revenue sectors. “These are impactful achievements that no objective observer can ignore,” he added.

Ken Agyapong, who contested Bawumia in the NPP presidential primaries and emerged second, has publicly criticized the Vice President’s leadership role in the current administration. He argues that Bawumia should take responsibility for the economic hardships Ghanaians are experiencing, and thus cannot represent a credible break from the past.

However, Akomea believes that the narrative of failure is politically driven and lacks nuance. He stressed that economic challenges stem from both global and local factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, and must be viewed in a broader context.

He also urged party unity ahead of the 2024 general elections, emphasizing the need for all NPP members, including Ken Agyapong, to rally behind Dr. Bawumia. “Our goal is to break the 8-year cycle, and that can only be achieved with unity, not internal divisions,” he concluded.

Nana Akomea’s comments aim to clarify the Vice President’s role and rally support for the NPP’s flagbearer amidst growing internal debate.
