Tension Mounts in Wulensi as 99 Suspended NDC Members Cry Foul Over ‘Political Prosecution’

Tensions are rising in Wulensi, a constituency in Ghana's Northern Region, following the suspension of 99 members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The affected individuals claim they are victims of a targeted political purge, describing their suspension as an act of “political prosecution” aimed at silencing dissent within the party.

The suspensions, which were reportedly approved by the NDC’s regional leadership, stem from accusations of gross misconduct and anti-party behavior during recent internal elections and organizational activities. However, the suspended members allege that the disciplinary action is rooted not in genuine violations, but in their association with a faction opposed to the current leadership of the constituency executives.

In a joint press statement released over the weekend, the suspended members voiced frustration over what they described as “deliberate attempts to marginalize loyal foot soldiers and grassroots activists who demand accountability and fairness.” According to them, no fair hearing was granted before the suspension letters were issued, and the internal disciplinary procedures outlined in the party’s constitution were blatantly disregarded.

“The leadership has chosen to persecute members simply because they expressed support for alternative voices within the party,” one of the suspended members lamented. “This is not justice—it’s a political witch-hunt.”

The fallout from the mass suspension has raised concerns among party elders and political observers who worry that the internal wrangling could jeopardize the NDC’s unity and performance in the 2024 general elections. Some have called on the national leadership to intervene immediately and establish an independent committee to investigate the matter impartially.

Meanwhile, supporters of the constituency executives defend the suspensions, arguing that discipline is necessary to maintain order and cohesion in the party. They insist that the actions were lawful and based on clear breaches of party rules.

As the situation continues to escalate, calls for reconciliation and due process are growing louder. Political analysts caution that if not resolved swiftly, the internal crisis could deepen voter apathy and erode the NDC’s support base in Wulensi—potentially handing an advantage to their political rivals.
