Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has reaffirmed his faith in Robert Sánchez as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. This comes amid speculation surrounding Chelsea’s recent but unsuccessful attempt to sign French international Mike Maignan from AC Milan.
Speaking in a quote shared by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Maresca made it clear that Sánchez remains his trusted option between the sticks. His comments follow Chelsea’s failed pursuit of Maignan, who is entering the final year of his contract with the Serie A side.
Chelsea had reportedly hoped to bring in Maignan ahead of the Club World Cup, aiming to bolster their goalkeeping options. However, AC Milan's asking price proved too high, leading the Blues to abandon the move.
Many fans interpreted the attempted signing of Maignan as a sign that Chelsea had lost confidence in Sánchez, especially after some high-profile mistakes last season. However, Maresca insisted that his trust in the Spanish goalkeeper never wavered, even before talks with Maignan began.
He said in a quote posted by Fabrizio Romano on his official X page:
“Robert Sánchez is No. 1 and then Filip Jorgensen is No. 2. Mike Penders has joined us. Then we will take a final decision.”
Maresca also addressed the situation on the wings. Chelsea have long had a strong preference for wingers, and with Jadon Sancho set to leave—having been left out of the Club World Cup squad following the end of his loan—Enzo assured fans that, although the team currently has three wingers, something will be done to strengthen that department.
Chelsea will face American side LA Galaxy in the first game of the Club World Cup, and Maresca has repeatedly assured fans that the club is up to the task of winning the tournament.
Recall that he is one of the longest-serving Chelsea managers in this present decade and century—and also one of the most successful. After all, qualifying for Champions League football and winning the Conference League is certainly regarded as success in this age and time.
