In a significant move to broaden access to quality secondary education, the Ministry of Education in Ghana has announced the inclusion of 25 private senior high schools (SHSs) into the 2025 school selection process under the Free SHS programme. This marks a historic milestone, as private institutions are now part of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) for the first time.
Previously,
students seeking placement into second-cycle education primarily chose from
public SHSs. The recent addition of these private schools under Category E
provides candidates with more diverse options, accommodating different academic
interests and geographical preferences.
These
co-educational, day schools are located across all 16 regions of Ghana and
offer a variety of academic programmes, including General Arts, General
Science, Business, Technical, Visual Arts, Home Economics, and Agriculture.

To ensure
students have ample time to consider these new options, the Ghana Education
Service (GES) has extended the school selection deadline to Wednesday, June 25,
2025. In a statement signed by Mr. Prince Agyemang-Duah, Director of the
Schools and Instruction Division, the GES emphasized that this extension aims
to facilitate informed decision-making by candidates.
The
integration of private SHSs into the CSSPS is expected to alleviate congestion
at public schools, increase competition, and improve the overall quality of
education. By offering more choices, the government is committed to making
secondary education more accessible and equitable for Ghanaian students.
This
initiative underscores a growing partnership between public and private sectors
in education, paving the way for a more inclusive future. As the 2025/2026
academic year approaches, students and parents are encouraged to explore these
new options carefully, ensuring they make choices that best suit their academic
aspirations and geographical preferences.
