No Sponsors, No Support From My Own People, That Is Why I Suspended Kumawood Awards” – SamDakus Fires.

Ghanaian filmmaker and creative force behind the once-vibrant Kumawood Awards, Mr. Samuel Darko—widely known in the industry as SamDakus—has finally broken his silence on the abrupt halt of the prestigious awards scheme. In a revealing interview with media personality Ruthy Mummy DeNelson on SeanCity TV, the multi-talented producer and director disclosed that the awards were suspended due to a painful lack of sponsorship and, more heartbreakingly, a lack of support from key players in the Kumawood industry, especially those based in Kumasi.

“I didn’t stop the awards because I wanted to,” SamDakus said. “I had to suspend it because there was no money, no sponsorship. But what broke me the most was the zero support from the very people I was organizing it for.”

He went on to criticize what he described as a toxic culture of inconsistency and hypocrisy within the industry, noting that many stakeholders only validate the awards when they win—but are quick to discredit them when they don't. “When they win, the awards are authentic. When they lose, they call it fake. That’s the problem,” he lamented.

Despite investing his heart, time, and personal resources into creating a credible platform to honor Ghanaian film talent, SamDakus shared his deep disappointment at being abandoned by the very community he sought to uplift.

His candid remarks have sparked widespread discussion among film lovers and industry insiders, many of whom are now questioning why such a promising initiative was allowed to fade into silence.

As the Kumawood Awards remain on hold, a critical question lingers: Can the industry set aside pride and division to revive a platform that once celebrated its own heroes?
