Madam Faustina Djagbele Abbey, an onion seller at Makola Market in Accra, is suing Telecel Ghana for GH¢2 million. She says the company used her photo in an advert without asking her or getting her permission.
Faustina, known by many around “KwasiaDwaso,” was shocked to see her picture on billboards and online ads.
The photo was used as part of Telecel’s “Freedom Friday” promotion. Faustina says she never agreed to be part of any campaign. Now, she is demanding GH¢2 million in damages and GH¢5,000 to cover her legal costs.
Her lawyer, Justice Srem-Sai, says this is a clear case of image misuse. “You cannot just take someone’s picture and use it to promote your business without their consent,” he explained. Ghana’s laws support people’s rights to control how their image is used, especially in advertising.
The public has quickly shown support for Faustina. Many people on social media are angry that a big company would use the image of a hardworking woman without paying her.
This case is now making headlines across Ghana and beyond. Many see it as a reminder that everyone, no matter their job or background, deserves respect and fair treatment.
As of now, Telecel has not made any public statement about the issue.
Faustina’s bold step is inspiring others. She's not just fighting for herself—she’s standing up for every Ghanaian whose rights could be ignored. “I just want to be treated fairly,” she said.
And now, the whole country is watching.
