Hiding Hemp in Maize: A Strange Arrest That Made Me Think Twice

A few years ago, I was traveling through a small town—can’t even remember the name now—when I stopped to buy some roasted maize by the roadside. You know, the kind where the smoke catches in your throat, but the taste makes up for it? Yeah, that one. I remember chatting with the old woman selling it, and she casually mentioned how sometimes smugglers mix illegal stuff into food goods to avoid detection. I laughed. Honestly, I thought she was exaggerating. I mean… who hides drugs in maize?

Well, I’m not laughing now.

This week, news broke that a man was arrested in Nkurakan for doing just that—concealing what’s believed to be Indian hemp in a sack of maize. I had to read the headline twice. My first thought? Why maize? My second thought? People are getting real creative… and not in a good way.

According to reports, this wasn’t just a bit of weed tucked into a corner. The stuff was packed deep into the maize, probably hoping the smell and sight of the grains would throw off any curious eyes—or noses. But it didn’t work. The police caught on and swooped in. Now the guy’s in custody, and honestly, I can’t imagine it was worth it.

Thing is, this isn’t just about one guy in one town. It points to something bigger.

There’s a whole network—quiet, hidden, and maybe even just a few doors down from us—trying to move illegal substances in the most everyday ways. Maize sacks. Yam trucks. Palm oil bottles. I’ve seen stories of all of these. And it messes with your head a bit, right? Like, next time I see someone offloading foodstuff from a van, I might actually wonder, “What else is in there?”

But here’s the kicker: I can’t help but wonder what pushed this guy to take that risk. Was it desperation? Greed? A dare gone too far? I don’t know his story, and maybe that’s what bothers me. Because behind every arrest like this, there’s a real person—someone who probably didn’t dream of ending up like this when they were a kid playing football in the street.

We live in a world where the line between survival and criminality gets blurry. I’m not making excuses—let’s be clear. But I am saying… maybe we need to look a little deeper sometimes. What systems keep people coming back to these risky choices? And what can actually change that?

I still buy maize on the roadside now and then. But I’ll admit—it hits a bit differently these days.

What would it take to live in a place where hiding drugs in food isn’t even a thought people entertain?
