Fenerbahçe has made significant efforts to sign Jhon Durán from Al Nassr, as reported exclusively by Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu. This was also confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, who credited Yağız for the news.
Devin Obek, Fenerbahçe's new sporting director, was reportedly in Saudi Arabia to convince the Colombian striker after reaching an agreement with him and his agents. The ball is now in Durán’s court, and the Turkish giants are actively pushing to bring the former Aston Villa striker back to Europe—less than six months after his big-money move to Saudi Arabia.
Recall that Al Nassr reportedly acquired Durán from Aston Villa during the January transfer window for a fee of around €85million. He was signed as a replacement for Anderson Talisca, who also left for Fenerbahçe, and as a strike partner for Cristiano Ronaldo.
This came after the Saudi side attempted to sign Victor Boniface from Leverkusen but later abandoned the deal in favor of Durán. It is rumored that Ronaldo played a role in Durán’s signing, having reportedly picked him personally. This doesn’t seem far-fetched, considering Ronaldo was offered a stake in Al Nassr as part of his new contract.
As for Durán, José Mourinho is trying to convince the Colombian to join a squad being built to challenge Galatasaray—who are aiming for a third consecutive league title—and end Fenerbahçe’s 11-year Turkish Süper Lig trophy drought.
This comes after Fenerbahçe failed to secure Victor Osimhen, who has reportedly told all Turkish clubs he would only consider negotiations with Galatasaray. Recall that Osimhen played a major role in Fenerbahçe's trophyless season, scoring crucial goals including a brace that eliminated them from the Turkish Cup.
He essentially taught Mourinho a tough lesson in Turkish football. Nevertheless, Fenerbahçe are determined to build a title-contending squad after finishing second for the third consecutive season. Meanwhile, their fiercest rivals, Galatasaray, are currently focused on signing a new goalkeeper and attempting to convince Osimhen—who remains on the radar of top European clubs—to commit
permanently.
