Liverpool has announced that jersey number 20 will be immortalized in honor of Diogo Jota.

In a statement released by the club, it noted that "Number 20 will be rightly immortalized" in recognition of his contributions to winning the Premier League with Liverpool — the 20th Premier League trophy in the club’s history.

This comes as the footballing world pays tribute to Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André, who both died in a tragic car accident.

The incident was first reported by Spanish outlet Marca, which revealed that the tire of Jota's Lamborghini "popped" while he was trying to overtake another vehicle near Zamora, along the A-52 highway in Spain. The car veered off the road and caught fire, killing both Jota and André — who also played professional football in the Portuguese league.

This was later confirmed by BBC and CNN, with police revealing that the surrounding vegetation also caught fire and had to be extinguished due to the intensity of the flames.

In its statement, Liverpool asked for privacy for the family during this difficult time.

It is worth recalling that Jota recently married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children. His last post on X (formerly Twitter) featured their wedding date and the caption “forever.”

Sadly, Jota did not get to spend much time with his wife.

Portugal also held a moment of silence for the brothers during their Women’s Euro match against Spain.

Liverpool fans gathered at the front of Anfield to pay tribute to Diogo, leaving flowers and heartfelt notes.

The club also revealed that his jersey number will be immortalized along with his celebration commemorating his final goal for Liverpool in the Meryside Derby.

Diogo Jota was just 28 years old, while his younger brother André was 25.This thing is bigger than football. A mother lost her two children in a day while a wife lost her husband and children lost their dad all in one day?. RIP Diogo And Andre Jota.
