Red Cloth Draped Over Late MP Ernest Kumi’s Seat in Parliament as House Mourns
A somber mood took over Ghana’s Parliament on Monday, July 7, 2025, following the heartbreaking news of the passing of Akwatia’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi. In a powerful gesture of mourning, his seat in the chamber was draped with a red cloth—a solemn parliamentary tradition used to honor a sitting MP who has died.
According to a report by Oyerepa FM, the symbolic display of the red cloth moved several MPs to tears. Colleagues visibly struggled with the loss, with many shaken by how unexpected it was. Just a few days earlier, Kumi had been seen on national television, appearing energetic and in good health.
The news of his sudden death left many stunned and heartbroken.
Lawmakers and citizens alike took to social media to express their sorrow. Tributes poured in, with many describing Kumi as a promising young leader whose political career had just begun to take shape. Admirers remembered him as respectful, driven, and deeply committed to serving the people of Akwatia.
Kumi was elected in 2024 on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ticket and had only recently entered Parliament.
Although his time in office was brief and marked by legal battles surrounding the legitimacy of his seat, he had just been cleared of contempt charges by the Supreme Court and was preparing to fully embrace his role as MP. Sadly, a sudden illness claimed his life before that could happen.
As a mark of respect, the red cloth will remain on his seat for several days. Members of Parliament also wore black and red armbands to show they were in mourning. His passing leaves a significant void not only in the Akwatia Constituency but also within the NPP and Parliament at large.
