Ghanaian actor and comedian Richard Asante, popularly known as Kalybos, has shared his views on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections. According to him, the loss was expected. Despite being a staunch supporter of the NPP, he believes the party’s downfall was largely self-inflicted.
Speaking on Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie, Kalybos noted that many Ghanaians anticipated the defeat, particularly as the NPP struggled to manage worsening economic conditions in its final years in office.
“We all saw the economic hardship. I’m fully committed to the party, but when something is wrong, you have to say it. There was a problem—someone just wasn’t listening,†he stated.
He further pointed to internal disunity and the electorate’s tendency to seek change every eight years as key factors. According to him, Ghana’s democratic pattern often favors new leadership after two terms, especially when the ruling party loses touch with the people.
“With our system, it seems every eight years people opt for change, depending on how frustrated they are in the government's final term. And we all saw it—this isn’t about party loyalty. Things were in disarray,†he said.
Kalybos also criticized the party’s apparent lack of direction, suggesting the loss could serve as a wake-up call.
“It was a mess. So much was going wrong—it was bound to happen. Hopefully, they’ll reflect on everything and make improvements. At some point, they weren’t truly serving the people. That’s where the problem started. But now, I think they’re correcting their mistakes, and they’ll come back stronger.â€
