“Planning Your Sunday? Check This First — ECG’s Planned Maintenance Will Hit These Areas July 13”

— Don’t get caught in the dark.

-Last month, I sat on the edge of my bed at 8:12pm trying to finish an online job application before the deadline… when poof, lights out.

No warning. No schedule. Just… darkness.

And no, my generator didn’t have fuel. (Why would it? I thought I was safe that day.)

So when I saw the notice from ECG this morning that they’ll be doing planned maintenance on Sunday, July 13, 2025, my first thought was: Good. At least this time we know.

But also? My second thought was: Here we go again…

-Why This Matters

Let me just say what we’re all thinking — electricity in Ghana is unpredictable.

Even when it’s “planned,” it somehow still catches people off guard.

But here’s the thing: ECG is actually giving us a heads-up this time.

(Shocking, I know. Pun intended.)

So before you line up your Sunday plans — wedding livestreams, binge-watching, or baking bread — make sure you’re not in one of the affected areas.

Because nothing’s more annoying than pulling a hot pan out of the oven only to realize your fan isn’t working and you’re about to sweat your life away.

-So… Which Areas Will Be Affected?

According to ECG, maintenance works will take place on Sunday, July 13, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

It’s part of what they call their “system improvement program” — whatever that really means.

Here are some of the places scheduled to go dark:

✅ Dansoman

✅ Adenta

✅ Kasoa

✅ Achimota

✅ Spintex

✅ Madina

✅ East Legon

✅ Parts of Tema

✅ Mallam & McCarthy Hill

…and a few smaller neighborhoods tucked around those zones.

In my experience, it’s always safer to assume if you’re near one of these places, you might get hit too.

(ECG doesn’t always get the lines exactly where they say they’re working, you know what I mean?)

-How You Can Stay Ready

Over the years, here are a few little hacks I’ve picked up (the hard way) for days like this:

Charge all your power banks and gadgets Saturday night.

Buy enough sachet or bottled water — pumps won’t work if you’re on an electric one.

Make ice. Lots of ice.

If you have a small generator, check fuel levels and test it Saturday.

Plan your cooking earlier — nothing worse than eating bread and sardine at midnight because you couldn’t boil rice.

Also… maybe charge your rechargeable fan if you have one. Sunday afternoons are brutal without breeze.

-Here’s What I’ve Noticed Lately…

I could be wrong, but it seems like these maintenance cuts have become more frequent.

On one hand, it’s good that ECG is fixing the system.

On the other hand… it makes you wonder what’s really going on with all that cash we’ve been paying for “service improvement” all these years.

Just saying.

-Final Thought

At the end of the day, nobody likes to be left in the dark — literally or figuratively.

So don’t wait till you’re halfway through braiding your hair and the clippers die to remember.

Check if you’re in the affected zone and plan ahead.

And here’s what I keep asking myself:

Will there ever be a time in Ghana when we won’t have to “plan our lives” around light-offs? Or is this just our normal?

What do you think?
