Breaking: Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s Former President, Is Dead

Nigeria is in mourning following the passing of its former president, Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in a London hospital. His longtime spokesperson, Garba Shehu, confirmed the news through an official statement released on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In a heartfelt message, Shehu wrote, “The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a London clinic. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 until 2023, had been struggling with an undisclosed illness for several weeks. Reports from Premium Times indicate that he was receiving treatment at a private medical facility in London when his health took a turn for the worse.

The 81-year-old leaves behind a legacy that is both complex and impactful, filled with moments of both praise and controversy. A retired Major General, Buhari initially came to power through a military coup in 1983, ruling as Nigeria’s Head of State until 1985. He later made history by returning to office as a democratically elected president, becoming the first opposition candidate in Nigeria to defeat an incumbent president in an election.

During his eight years in office as a civilian president, Buhari was recognized for his firm anti-corruption stance, dedication to infrastructure improvements, and efforts aimed at stabilizing the economy. Yet, his administration also faced considerable criticism over issues like insecurity, soaring inflation, and the decline of civil liberties.

Even after stepping down from public office in May 2023, Buhari remained a significant figure in Nigerian politics and was regarded as a respected elder statesman across Africa. His passing signals the close of a chapter for a leader whose influence on Nigeria’s military and democratic journey will be remembered for many years to come.

Messages of condolence have started to flood in from political leaders, international figures, and citizens both in Nigeria and around the world, reflecting on his service, contributions, and the profound nature of his loss. In the coming days, the Nigerian government and his family are expected to provide details regarding burial arrangements and official tributes.
