The Assembly Member for Tarkwa Bremang Electoral Area, Isaac Duku, popularly known as Agoogi, has been arrested by the Western Central Regional Police Command for his alleged involvement in illegal mining activities and the unlawful diversion of a public road.

His arrest follows a complaint made by residents of Tarkwa Bremang, who reported the matter to the Bawdie Police Station on Monday, July 14, 2025. According to the residents, Mr. Duku had diverted the main access road that connects the community to other parts of Tarkwa, without any official approval. He is also accused of using the diverted stretch of land for illegal mining operations.

Police sources indicate that the arrest took place on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Dortaso, a community near Tarkwa. Officers responded swiftly to the complaint and began investigations, which led to the discovery of mining activities being carried out on the land in question. It is alleged that Mr. Duku used his influence as a local government representative to encroach on public land for personal gain.

“The road diversion not only inconvenienced residents but also posed serious safety risks,” a police official familiar with the case said. “Our investigations confirmed the existence of unauthorized mining activity, prompting his immediate arrest.”

Residents have expressed relief over the arrest, saying the road diversion had disrupted movement and daily activities in the community. Some community members claimed they had raised concerns earlier but were ignored, allegedly due to Mr. Duku’s political position.

Illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, continues to be a major challenge across Ghana, causing extensive environmental damage and social unrest in affected communities. The government has intensified its efforts to crack down on individuals and groups involved in such activities, particularly when public officials are implicated.

Police have confirmed that Mr. Duku is currently in custody and assisting with investigations. Authorities say further details will be released as the case progresses.

Meanwhile, the diverted road remains closed, pending an official directive from the appropriate municipal authorities.
