Jesus Christ will return, and the church will soon be caught up in heaven to be with Him. This event is expected soon by all Christians, especially with the frequent apocalyptic events that have been witnessed all over the world in recent times. Many prophets and teachers are now bold enough to publicly advertise the date of Christ’s return and the catching up of saints. This, again, is not a new trend.

In a Centtwinz Podcast interview on Jul 22, 2025, Mr Joshua Mhlakela, of the Chief Cornerstone Ministry based in South Africa, claimed that he was given a revelation with specific dates during the days of the catching away of the saints. While discarding the former dates as mere calls for preparation for the church, he confirmed September 23 and 24 of 2025 as the days when the world will no more be the same.  The church will be raptured, and the world will experience a great destruction” he explained.

Has the church witnessed heretics like these in the past? Sure! Take a trip down memory lane with the USA Apple Store books! Please read on!

In the second century, the prophet and founder of Montanism predicted Christ’s return and the establishment of the new Jerusalem in Phrygia, now named Turkey! This failed and he was declared a heretic! In the 18th century, precisely 1843-1844, William Miller predicted the return of Jesus Christ from March to October 1844. It was a great disappointment for the world, and many of the Christian groups went ahead and formed the Adventist Church of today.

Preacher Jim Jones encouraged hundreds of cult members to take their own lives in Ghana in the 1970s. The Jehovah's Witness church stormed the world with its own predictions. From 1914 to 1975, members of this group consisting of millions of people all over the world anticipated the end of the world or the rapture. The days failed to meet their expectations. The teachings of the church were quickly revised

to comfort broken-hearted and financially damaged members. Pat Robertson was very certain that Jesus was returning to take the Church home in 1980. The leader of the cult Heaven's Gate convinced 39 followers to commit suicide to escape imminent destruction in 1997. Herbert W. Armstrong in his publications strongly implied that 1975 could mark the beginning of the Great Tribulation or Christ’s return.

Hal Lindsey, in her book “The Late Great Planet Earth” published in 1970, predicted the rapture for 1988, having counted from Israel's founding in 1948. Edgar C. Whisenant predicted September 1988, on the 11th and 13th days, and his book "88 Reasons Why the Rapture Will Be in 1988" sold in millions.

Harold Camping's prediction was widely celebrated. He nailed the dates of the destruction of the world and the rapture with May 21 and October 21, 2011, respectively. He made a public apology when these dates failed, and retired from further predictions afterwards. Ronald Weinland of the Church of God splinter group predicted dates in 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively. His predictions failed, and he had tax problems with the government afterwards. The blood moon predictions were the next global cry. Among the leaders of this prediction were theologians John Hagee and Mark Biltz, whose analysis of lunar events and Jewish feasts differs very little from Mr Joshua Mhlakela's logic lines this year.

The past few years have showcased hundreds of YouTube and TikTok influencers taking up the prediction business. Rapture appointment dates are everywhere. It’s now a popular bait for more views and more followers. From dreams to visions to meeting Angels to seeing Jesus Christ giving dates, times, and seasons of his arrival, the rapture, and world destruction. Social media platforms spare nothing to get more views. Are they permitted to play with this concept? I think yes! Remember when the disciples came to tell Jesus that a strange person was using his name to perform miracles? Jesus told them to let him be! He was not an enemy, Christ advised! (Mark 9:38-41). False predictions by Christians may be a very active part of the viral drama of Jesus Christ's teachings about the end times!

From unknown evangelists to famous preachers, predictions of Christ’s return and the apocalyptic events to follow prompt soul-searching moments and self-judgement for those who believe. Many souls repent of their wrongdoings, and many recommit their lives to Christ. Many affected people become "watchers" and "intercessors" and give intercessory prayers and supplications to God from many holy places. Furthermore, the false predictions prove that the Bible teachings remain true: “No one knows the day or the hour (Matthew 24:36).

Let the church, Christ's bride, remain prepared!
