The Ghana Education Service (GES) has temporarily shut down three Senior High Schools in the Upper East Region following a spate of violent incidents that have claimed student lives, injured others, and caused extensive damage to school property.
The statement described the incidents as deeply disturbing, emphasising their impact on academic activities and the emotional toll on students, staff, and affected families.
In response to concerns over academic disruptions, particularly for final-year students preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the GES stated it is working with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, and school authorities to make alternative arrangements.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 30, the GES confirmed that the disturbances occurred at Bawku Senior High School, Nalerigu Senior High School, and Zuarungu Senior High School between July 20 and 26, 2025.
Special examination centres and secure locations are being considered to allow SHS 3 students to sit for their papers under safe and fair conditions. For continuing students in SHS 1 and 2, the GES said it is exploring remote and alternative learning options to ensure teaching continues during the temporary closure. Further information on these interventions will be announced in the coming days.
The statement also acknowledged the swift evacuation of students by government authorities and security personnel, led by the Ministry of the Interior.
The Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has received confirmed reports of violent incidents at Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS, which have resulted in the tragic loss of student lives, injuries, and significant damage to school property. These events, which occurred between 20th and 26th July 2025, have severely disrupted academic activities and caused deep distress among students, families, and school staff. The GES condemns in no uncertain terms these acts of violence.
The GES expresses its sincerest condolences to the bereaved families and affected school communities. We stand with them in this difficult moment and assure them of our full support.
