A tragic road accident in Accra’s Central Business District (CBD) on Monday afternoon has claimed the Life of an elderly woman and left several others with injuries. The incident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. near the COCOBOD building, shocked traders and passersby who witnessed the heartbreaking scene.

The accident involved an Ayalolo bus with registration number GT 5493–17. According to eyewitnesses, the bus suddenly lost control while moving through the busy commercial stretch. It veered off the main road and climbed onto the pavement, where traders were still conducting business. Unfortunately, one elderly woman was struck and died instantly, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The President of the Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG), David Amoateng, who was at the scene, gave an account of the incident on Adom FM’s Kasiebo is Tasty. He revealed that before hitting the traders, the bus crashed into two vehicles — a sprinter bus (GR 2238–X) and a double-cabin pickup (GW 2377–Y). He explained that this collision may have reduced the full force of the bus, which possibly prevented more deaths, as many traders were stationed directly in front of the COCOBOD building.

Emergency services responded quickly, rushing the injured victims to nearby hospitals for treatment. While the exact number of injured persons is not confirmed, eyewitnesses reported that several people were badly hurt and remain in critical condition.

The accident has sparked discussions about road safety and urban trading spaces in Accra, especially in the CBD where heavy vehicular traffic often clashes with pedestrian activity. Traders and advocacy groups are calling for stricter measures, including better traffic enforcement and the relocation of traders from high-risk areas.

Police have begun investigations to determine the cause of the accident, including whether mechanical failure or driver error was to blame. Authorities are expected to provide further updates in the coming days.
