NIGERIA 1-0 RWANDA: TOLU SCORES WINNER AS OSIMHEN SUFFERS INJURY SCARE

The Super Eagles have secured their second win of the World Cup qualifiers with a narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda, thanks to new Wolves signing Tolu Arokodare, who came on as a super sub to score the only goal in the 51st minute. Nigeria held firm to defend the lead until the final whistle.

Despite the victory, the match was not without controversy. In the 9th minute, Victor Osimhen’s goal was ruled out for offside, sparking debate over the absence of VAR in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Worse still, Osimhen was forced off in the 35th minute after a harsh tackle from a Rwandan defender. Shockingly, the referee refused to issue a card. The Galatasaray striker initially tried to continue but signaled to the bench minutes later for a substitution. Although he walked off the pitch—suggesting the injury may not be an ACL tear since that is typically non-contact—it appeared to be a mild sprain.

This means Osimhen is highly unlikely to feature in Tuesday’s crucial away clash against South Africa. Even if the injury proves minor, Galatasaray may be unwilling to risk their €80m investment.

That leaves the Super Eagles with a tactical dilemma. To stand a chance against South Africa, the coach must avoid the same mistakes from today’s match:

Starting Ndidi and Onyeka together (two defensive midfielders).

Using both Lookman and Moses Simon, who prefer the left flank, leaving the right wing exposed and disrupting Ola Aina’s attacking flow.

If Osimhen is unavailable, the coach should start Tolu as striker, with Lookman playing just behind him. If Osimhen is fit, then playing both forwards together would give Nigeria more attacking firepower.

Hopefully Osimhen will be fit at least for his next Galatasaray match against Eyuspor and champions League match against Frankfurt.

With this win, the Super Eagles move one step closer to World Cup qualification. Let’s go, Naija! 🇳🇬
