Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana is expected to join Trabzonspor on loan after returning from international duty. This was announced by transfer experts Ben Jacobs and Fabrizio Romano. The Cameroonian goalkeeper was informed by United coach Rúben Amorim that he was not in his plans for the 2025 season.

Recall that he joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 after a stellar UCL final, which they unfortunately lost to Manchester City through no fault of his. Manchester United signed him to replace their legendary goalkeeper David de Gea. However, the marriage didn’t start—or end—well. According to reports, André Onana has conceded 102 goals in 150 matches, which is considered very poor for a goalkeeper.

Former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder even called him the “worst goalkeeper in Manchester United history.”

However, despite all this, Trabzonspor might just be the place where Onana is reborn. Turkish fans are very passionate and could help him regain his lost confidence. Though he obviously has to step up to earn the love and respect of Trabzonspor fans, he will be expected to fill the gap left by their former captain and number one goalkeeper, Uğurcan Çakır, who transferred to Galatasaray. If Onana performs well, not only would he gain a huge cult-like following in Turkey, but he might also earn a transfer to a top team at the end of the season, as there is no buy option or obligation to buy. Plus, he is getting a pay raise due to the tax structure in Turkey.

In addition, he also received a signing bonus and other monetary rewards, as he was essentially loaned out for free with Manchester United eager to get him off their wage bill. United fans also wanted him out, so it’s clearly a win-win for both sides. Hopefully, we’ll see a new and improved André Onana by the end of the season.
