A major fire outbreak at Lartebiokorshie in Accra has destroyed seven houses and injured one firefighter, leaving residents in shock and forcing security agencies to step in. The incident, which began in the late afternoon, sparked fear among community members who rushed out of their homes to safety.
Quick Response from Fire Service
According to Assistant Chief Fire Officer Rashid Nisawu, the fire started at around 4:15 p.m. The first emergency call was received almost immediately, and the Ghana National Fire Service dispatched a fire tender within a minute. By 4:24 p.m., the first fire engine was already at the scene.
“We have been able to confine the fire. Currently, we have six fire engines working to contain the blaze,” Officer Nisawu confirmed. He urged residents to remain calm, adding that there was no need for panic as the situation was under control.
Firefighters Face Water Supply Challenges
One of the major challenges faced by the fire service was the limited water supply in the area. “We had to travel to distant places to get water,” Officer Nisawu explained. The police were also called in to control the crowd and ensure the safety of residents during the firefighting efforts.
Injuries and Emergency Response
Although no lives were lost, one firefighter and a civilian were injured in the process. They received quick medical attention from the Ambulance Service team on-site. Emergency responders continue to monitor the area as investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
Families Count Their Losses
The outbreak has left many families counting their losses as properties worth thousands of cedis were destroyed. Some residents who managed to salvage a few belongings are appealing for support to rebuild their lives.
Authorities Urge Calm as Investigations Continue
Authorities have assured the community that more updates will be provided as the investigation continues. In the meantime, residents are being advised to remain calm, avoid crowded areas near the scene, and allow emergency workers to complete their duties safely.
