Goalscorer Says He's 'More Hungry' After Double Ends Scoring Drought in Dominant European Victory

Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres has declared his intent to carry his newly rediscovered goalscoring momentum directly into the Premier League, answering a challenge laid down by manager Mikel Arteta. The Swedish international ended a recent seven-game goal drought by scoring twice in a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Atlético Madrid in the Champions League at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.

The goals were a timely return to form for the 27-year-old striker, bringing his total tally for the Gunners to five following his £58 million ($77 million) summer move from Sporting Lisbon, where he had an outstanding record of 97 goals in 102 appearances.

Focus Shifts to London Derby

With Arsenal heading back to domestic action against London rivals Crystal Palace at home on Sunday, manager Arteta immediately challenged Gyokeres to maintain this level of performance in the league. The player readily embraced the call, emphasizing the significance of his contribution beyond just work rate.

"I'm more hungry now," said Gyokeres. "You always want to contribute with work rate and other stuff, but when you score goals as well, it's a bit special. So that's something I always want to do."

The striker also praised the current atmosphere within the Premier League leaders' squad, noting, "The group we have and the spirit is something different and something very special." He added that dominant performances like the one against Atlético Madrid are vital for reinforcing confidence and belief within the team.

Defensive Solidity Underpins Success

Arsenal’s impressive victory over Atlético Madrid was not just a testament to their attacking power but also their formidable defensive organization. The Gunners have maintained a perfect record of three wins and three clean sheets in Europe this season.

This defensive resilience is a hallmark of their early-season form. Across their first 12 fixtures this term, Arsenal have conceded only three goals-against Liverpool, Newcastle, and Manchester City-with just one of those coming from open play.

Goalkeeper David Raya, who has recorded five consecutive shutouts, highlighted the importance of this defensive stability. "I give clean sheets the same credit as goals," Raya commented. "If we're keeping clean sheets, it's going to make games easier to win. It's really, really important for the whole team, not giving away that many chances and being very, very solid."

Raya also praised the incredible depth and versatility of the squad, noting that players can operate across multiple positions, which keeps everyone on their toes. He cited (Mikel) Merino, who came on as a striker against Atlético but can play as a No. 6, 8, or 10, demonstrating the tactical flexibility that manager Arteta is utilizing to the team’s advantage.

Arsenal, currently topping the Premier League table, will take a three-point cushion over second-placed Manchester City into the weekend fixtures, with Liverpool sitting a further point adrift.
