In a firm stance against indiscipline and violence in schools, President John Dramani Mahama has strongly condemned recent assaults on educators, emphasizing that his administration will not tolerate "teacher brutality." Speaking at the Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on January 5, 2026, the President called for stricter accountability and legal consequences for those who attack teaching staff.

The President’s comments were primarily triggered by a disturbing incident at Kade Senior High School that gained national attention in late 2025.

A video circulated online showing students physically attacking a mathematics teacher after he refused to allow them to cheat during an examination. President Mahama expressed deep concern over the "sense of entitlement" displayed by the students and questioned the subsequent handling of the case by local authorities.

According to reports, the assault was initially reported to the police; however, the matter was settled out of court. The President revealed that investigations indicated the teacher had been compensated, leading him to drop the charges. Mahama criticized this "amicable settlement," arguing that criminal acts like assault should not be wiped away by financial compensation alone. He maintained that even if the teacher chose not to press charges, the legal system should have intervened to ensure the students faced some form of corrective discipline.

"This is assault. It is criminal," Mahama stated. He suggested that, at the very least, the students should have been booked and bonded to be of good behavior for a specific period. He argued that bypassing the legal process sends a wrong message about justice and teacher safety.

The President's remarks align with the sentiments of GNAT President, Rev. Isaac Owusu, who also warned that the association would no longer stand by while its members are victimized. Mahama concluded his address by pledging 100% support for teachers, promising that his government would ensure a safe working environment where educators can perform their duties without fear of violence or harassment.
