The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has signed new cooperation agreements with 25 government institutions in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s national data system and improving how government information is used for policy decisions.
The agreements, known as Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), were signed with various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). Officials say the partnership will help public institutions share data more efficiently and ensure that national statistics are accurate, reliable, and timely.
The signing ceremony brought together senior government officials, statisticians, and representatives from several state agencies who will now work closely with the statistical service to coordinate data collection and reporting.
Improving Data for National Planning
According to the Ghana Statistical Service, the agreements are part of a broader effort to strengthen Ghana’s National Statistical System. By collaborating with multiple government institutions, the agency aims to improve the quality of administrative data generated across the public sector.
Officials explained that reliable data plays a critical role in national development planning. With stronger collaboration between institutions, policymakers will be able to make better informed decisions on issues such as economic development, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
The new framework will also help standardize data management practices among government agencies and promote responsible data sharing.
Supporting Evidence-Based Governance
Experts say the initiative is an important step toward evidence-based governance in Ghana. Government institutions produce large amounts of administrative data every year, but coordination between agencies has sometimes been limited.
Through the MoUs, the participating MDAs will now work closely with the statistical service to ensure that their data systems align with national statistical standards.
This collaboration will also help reduce duplication of data collection efforts and improve efficiency across government institutions.
Strengthening Ghana’s Statistical Architecture
The agreements are expected to play a key role in strengthening Ghana’s statistical architecture and improving transparency in public sector information.
With better coordination and data quality assurance, analysts believe the government will be better equipped to monitor development goals and track progress across key sectors of the economy.
The partnership also reflects growing recognition of the importance of data in shaping national policy and guiding sustainable development.
