I know the darkness is frustrating. I know businesses are struggling, food is spoiling, and families are uncomfortable. Your anger is valid. Your frustration is heard.
Every single moment of lights out is not acceptable especially when you pay for the power you consume.
Let me give you the facts,
On Thursday, 23rd April 2026, a fire broke out at the GRIDCo substation at Akosombo, the nerve centre that channels power from the Akosombo Dam into our national grid. In one incident, Ghana lost close to 1,000 megawatts of electricity. To put that in context, our entire national peak demand is approximately 4,400 megawatts. We lost nearly a quarter of our power supply overnight. Because of a fire outbreak.
This happened during the period when Electricity Company of Ghana Limited is undertaking a massive replacement of old and faulty transformers across major parts of the country, so you can appreciate how much of an impact this has been on the Ghanaian people.
The government has already halted all electricity exports to neighbouring countries, redirecting every unit of generated power to Ghanaian homes and businesses. Our thermal plants are being pushed to maximum output, and the Ministry has confirmed sufficient fuel reserves to keep them running through the recovery. Engineers are working around the clock to restore the facility.
Is this painful? Absolutely. Is it a failure of government? No. It is a national emergency caused by an unforeseen incident at critical infrastructure.
I ask my people, especially those at the grassroots who look to us for leadership, do not let political opportunists use your suffering to score points. The Energy Minister and his technical teams do not need condemnation right now. They need our support, our prayers, our patience, and the space to work.
We have come through harder times. We will come through this, too.
Stay safe. Support your neighbours. Ghana will not be left in the dark.
