A major water infrastructure project valued at 106 million euros has moved a step closer to implementation after the Ghana Water Company Limited began formal stakeholder consultations in the Savannah Region, in a development that could significantly expand access to safe piped water in one of the country's most water-insecure areas.
MyJoyOnline reported the start of the stakeholder consultation process on June 16, 2026, confirming that GWCL has engaged community leaders, district assembly representatives, civil society organizations, and technical stakeholders in the Savannah Region as part of the project's environmental and social impact assessment and community engagement requirements. The consultations are a prerequisite for project implementation under Ghana's environmental governance framework and the requirements of the development finance partners supporting the investment.
The Savannah Region, carved out from the former Brong-Ahafo Region and covering a large area of northern Ghana, has historically been among the country's most underserved in terms of piped water infrastructure. Rural communities in the region rely heavily on hand-dug wells, boreholes, dugouts, and seasonal water sources that carry significant risks of contamination, particularly during and after the rainy season. Waterborne diseases - including cholera, typhoid, and diarrhoeal illnesses - remain public health challenges in communities without access to treated water.
The Ghana Water Company Limited, which manages urban and peri-urban piped water supply under a mandate from the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, has been seeking to expand its reach in underserved regions through a combination of government budget allocations and external development finance. The African Development Bank and the European Investment Bank have both been active financing partners for Ghana's water sector infrastructure in recent years, according to reporting by the Ghana News Agency and the GWCL annual operations reports.
At 106 million euros, this project represents one of the more substantial single water infrastructure investments Ghana has attracted in the current decade and reflects continued international confidence in Ghana's infrastructure development agenda despite the economic turbulence of the past three years.
