The sudden death of Sulemana Abdul Samed popularly known as Awuche has left many Ghanaians grieving and mourning him.
Awuche is a humble product of Gambaga in the East of Mamprusi at North East region. However, he was not born as a "giant". All this happened at young age of 21 years in 2015. He got a severe swollen tongue which made breathing difficult for him. He suddenly got treatment which resulted in his rapid growth.
He was been diagnosed with acromegaly which is caused by the excessive production of hormone by the pituitary gland. His height increased massively every month which kept everyone wondering.
In order to survive and make a living in such condition, he worked as a farmer and mechanic simultaneously. Due to the intensive manpower, he got severe spinal complications which started his health nightmare. He could not travel due to his stature structure and even regular clothes or shoes couldnt fit at all. Due to this, he wore customly made clothings.
Upon all these problems, he was not recognized by Guiness World record for the tallest man. But he received National recognition as the tallest man in Ghana.
It appears that he passed away on Monday, 27th July, 2026 at the convenient Tamale Teaching Hospital after been transferred from Baptist Medical Centre.
He was initially receiving treatment at BMC for severe spinal pain and skin condition on his leg. However, things got worsened and he was transferred with the sponsorship of Philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama. At TTH, doctors recommended that there was a need to amputate his left leg due the offset of rotting on his leg.
But regardless everything, death still chose to find our generous man on his hospital bed. As at now, arrangements are been made by families and sympathizers to bury him in his homeland. What a painful death. May his soul rest in peace
