Five arrested over robbery and murder of gold buyer at Agona Nkwanta

The Western Regional Police Command has arrested five suspects in connection with the robbery and murder of a 40-year-old gold buyer, Seth Kobina, at Agona Fie near Agona Nkwanta in Ghana's Western Region.

The incident occurred on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at about 8:00 p.m., when armed men reportedly attacked Kobina's gold-buying shop. During the attack, the victim was shot in the chest.

Kobina was rushed to the Agona Nkwanta Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival.

CCTV footage helps police identify suspects

According to the Western Regional Police Command, preliminary investigations, including a review of CCTV footage from the scene, helped investigators identify 29-year-old Emmanuel Amponsah, alias “Vandam,” as the alleged leader of the gang.

Police arrested Amponsah on August 21 at a guest house in Agona Nkwanta. A search conducted on him reportedly led to the recovery of a locally manufactured pistol and two live BB cartridges.

However, after his arrest, Amponsah reportedly became ill and was taken to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for medical attention. He was subsequently pronounced dead on arrival. Police have not publicly disclosed the cause of his illness or death.

Four other suspects arrested

Further investigations led to the arrest of four other suspects.

They have been identified as:

  • Christopher Seyiri, alias “Cross and Die,” 47
  • Bashiru Ibrahim, 20
  • Thomas Odoom, alias “Wale,” 30
  • Isaac Quayeson, alias “Last Burial”

Seyiri, Ibrahim and Odoom were arrested within the Agona Nkwanta area, while Quayeson was arrested at Denkyira Kwaboso in the Western North Region.

Police also searched Quayeson's residence and reportedly recovered another locally manufactured pistol, three live BB cartridges, a metal bar and two cutlasses.

During investigations, police said Quayeson identified Emmanuel Amponsah as the person who allegedly shot and killed Seth Kobina. He also identified Thomas Odoom as one of the individuals captured in the CCTV footage during the robbery.

Police continue search for accomplices

The four surviving suspects are currently assisting police with investigations. Authorities are also working to identify and arrest other suspected accomplices believed to have participated in the robbery.

The development is significant because the CCTV footage appears to have played an important role in helping investigators trace individuals connected to the attack. However, the suspects remain alleged offenders, and their guilt will ultimately have to be established through the judicial process.

The case remains under investigation, with police expected to provide further information as investigations progress.

Latest update: Five people have been arrested in connection with the case, but four are currently alive and assisting investigators, following the death of alleged gang leader Emmanuel Amponsah after his arrest. Police are still pursuing other persons linked to the robbery and murder.
