Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba had been linked with a move to Real Madrid for some time, but the deal appears to have fallen through when Los Blancos slammed the brakes on the move.
The 28-year-old had been on Real Madrid's radar for a while, ever since his rise to prominence with Juventus, and it was felt that he could be a potential option in the near future, given his contract expires on June 30.
Despite being a fearsome presence in the middle of the park and possessing a wealth of potential, it appears that Real Madrid would prefer to invest their money elsewhere in the squad, with rumours of Mbappe not going away anytime soon.
Pogba is free to talk a transfer to another club as of January 1, but Real Madrid appears to be leaning toward maintaining Luka Modric rather than replacing him with the Frenchman.
During his two appearances as Real Madrid coach, Zinedine Zidane often indicated a desire to capture Pogba from Manchester United.
In turn, Pogba has not always been happy at Manchester United, with his darkest moments coming during Jose Mourinho's tenure, when the midfielder declared his wish to quit the club.
After years of conjecture, it appears like Real Madrid will pass up the chance to recruit one of the world's top midfielders.
Real Madrid's alternatives
Given Real Madrid's renowned midfield trio of Modric, Toni Kroos, and Casemiro, as well as the likes of Eduardo Camavinga, Fede Valverde, and Antonio Blanco, there is not an urgent need for Los Blancos to strengthen in the middle of the park.
As current Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti joked recently, the level that Modric, Kroos and Casemiro have shown in the last few weeks, they could still be dominating things for the next decade.
