The Kaneshie District Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier-Sosu.

This follows after Sosu has failed to appear before the court three times.

The court presided over by Oheneba Kufuor issued the bench warrant following a prayer by the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Sylvester Asare.

“He (MP) has a clear intention and has demonstrated that this court cannot procure his attendance and it amounts to disrespect to this court.

I have been ambushed by this process and this even confirmed by this application that he will not appear.”

Background

The Member of Parliament fled from arrest some weeks ago when he was leading his constituents in a demonstration over deplorable roads in his constituency.

He was again pursued by the police during Sunday church service but he managed to flee.

According to reports, the protestors blocked some roads making them impassable which were later unblocked by the MP’s order.

He was therefore pursued by the police to assist in investigations.

Francis Sosu lodged an official complaint to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin and the complaint was referred to the Privileges Committee for investigation.

The MP said he didn't deserve to be arrested or manhandled because the protest was not in contravention of the law because he had followed due process.

The Speaker of Parliament defended him and refused to hand him to the police for questions.

The Kaneshie District Court summoned him to answer a charge of highway obstruction leveled against him by the police.

After failing to appear in court thrice, the court issued a bench warrant for his arrest.
