Argentina's Lionel Messi won the Ballon d'Or award for the best player in the world for the seventh time on Monday, defeating Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho to retain football's most prestigious trophy.

After winning the Copa America for the first time with his country last July, the forward added to his 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2019 trophies.

"It's incredible to be back here. I thought it was the last time two years ago. "Winning the Copa America was crucial," Messi said at Paris's Theatre du Chatelet.

Messi, who joined PSG on a free transfer from Barcelona in the summer, finished with 613 points, while Bayern Munich's Lewandowski was named best striker on Monday with 580.

Jorginho, who won the Champions League and the European Championship with Chelsea, ended up third on 460, ahead of France’s Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante in fourth and fifth places respectively.

Chelsea has been named club of the year.

Chelsea has had many memorable nights in 2021, and last night was one of them when they were named club of the year by France Football.

They became the first club in history to have both men's and women's teams reach the Champions League final in the same season, and while only the men won the trophy, Emma Hayes' side claimed a dominant domestic treble.

Last night, Robert Lewandowski was perhaps the unluckiest party, with Lionel Messi even suggesting that France Football award him last year's award, which was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Still, it looks like he had a good time.

Messi has reached the seventh heaven.

First and foremost, let's go over what happened last night.

Lionel Messi, who already holds the record for the most Ballon d'Or awards in history, won his seventh, narrowly defeating Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski by 33 points.

Messi led Argentina to Copa America glory last summer and dazzled once more in an underwhelming Barcelona side before departing for PSG this summer.

However, there was cause for celebration at the Catalan club after Alexia Putellas won the Ballon d'Or Feminin for her outstanding performance in Barcelona's all-conquering women's team.
