Real Madrid extended their LaLiga winning streak with a weekend victory over Sevilla. The victory has more symbolic significance because Real Madrid has now opened up a significant four-point lead at the top of the table over cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad, who are tied on 29 points after 14 games. Los Blancos, on the other hand, have a comfortable lead with 33 points from 14 games.
Real Madrid's transfer activity this summer was very limited in terms of new purchases, with the club only settling for two new faces. First, David Alaba moved from German giants Bayern Munich to the Spanish capital on a free transfer. Second, a deadline-day transfer brought in a sought-after target in midfield, Eduardo Camavinga, a young Frenchman.
Even though the activity was limited, it was of the highest caliber. Both newcomers have settled in well at the club; while one has become an absolute rock in the defense and a first-choice starter, the second is assisting greatly in the rotation and providing much-needed rest to the older veterans.
As a result, given the recent transfer activity, I feel compelled to argue that David Alaba has been the best free-agent signing in World Football since Robert Lewandowski's dream move to Bayern Munich from Borussia Dortmund. Here are my reasons why David Alaba is the best free-agent signing in the last seven years.
The last big free transfer was David Alaba's former Bayern Munich teammate.
When it comes to recent free-agent signings, few can match the impact that Robert Lewandowski's move to Bayern Munich has had on the world of football.
He unquestionably takes the crown here. However, my claims are that no other signing has been better than David Alaba's since his transfer in 2014, and he deserves to be ranked second.
Manchester United has Edinson Cavani. And, in the theatre of dreams, the Uruguayan has worked his charm, scoring goals and playing a key role in their Europa League campaign last season. But, to be honest, his move isn't even close to the profile of Alaba's. Alaba has a significant age advantage over him at 29 years old.
Thiago Silva to Chelsea is also a draining move due to the Brazilian's age. Aside from that, he's been crucial to the Blues. Not to mention, he was a member of the Champions League-winning squad last season. Leon Goretzka is the final transfer I'd like to bring up in this discussion.
Not to mention, Gianluigi Donnarumma's move to PSG has enormous potential, but at a time when they already have someone as reliable as Keylor Navas, I'm not sure how much sense that makes. To say the least, it's subjective.
David Alaba has arrived. David Alaba, in my opinion, is a clear winner for the title of best free-agent signing in the last seven years. No other transfer comes close to his profile, and as I previously argued, he has fully justified it thus far in the season.
The figurative benefit of replacing someone as important as Sergio Ramos is another advantage for Alaba in making his case. His skill set has already been one of the most anticipated aspects of every game Real Madrid has played so far.
In quick time he is one of the club MVPs and deserves to be called the best free-agent signing since Lewa’s signing in 2014.
