The gridlock over the 2022 budget may not end anytime soon as members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have failed to show up in the house as of the time of writing this article. According to a post from a journalist with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Bubu Klinogo, media men who report from Parliament were greeted with empty seats.
Recall that the 2022 proposed budget was rejected last week, November 26, 2021 after the majority MPs boycotted proceedings over an excuse that the NDC's General Secretary, John Asiedu Nketia leaves the chamber of which he refused. The NDC MPs then went ahead with proceedings and rejected the budget, a development their opponents say is illegal.
Many have argued that the current situation in parliament on the budget is the first in the history of the forth republic. Well, as the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has travelled abroad for medical checkup, it will be difficult to get the budget approved if the demands of the NDC MPs are not met. Notable among the demands are the suspension of the proposed 1.75% e-levy, a provision for sea defense project at Blekusu in the Keta Municipality among others.
