Two women, Olu Olarusi Toyin Tracy, aka Tracy Mensah, and Yvette Mensah, have been fined GHS3,600 each by the Adjabeng District Court in Accra for supplying false information to the National Identification Authority (NIA) in order to obtain a Ghana card.
The two were charged with conspiracy to conduct crime, providing false information to NIA officials in violation of Sections 23(1) and 17(c) of the National Identification Authority Act, 707 (Act 2000), and providing false information to NIA officers. When they appeared in court, the two pleaded guilty to the charges on Monday, November 22nd, 2021
Ms Toyin has been ordered to be returned to her home country, in addition to the GHS3,600 fine.
On Friday, November 19, 2021, Ms Toyin and Ms Mensah went to the NIA's head office to get a Ghana card. She submitted a birth certificate as part of the paperwork needed to obtain the card.
Both were told that they would have to go through the standard verification that most candidates go through before being allowed to proceed with the registration process. The applicant's birth certificate listed Ms Mensah as the mother and Alhassan Fuseini, a Ghanaian, as the father.
The birth certificate was issued at the Bubuashie office of the Birth and Death Registry on Friday, October 22, 2021. It was likewise born at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, with the registration number 020107-3879-2021.
However, it was discovered over the course of the investigation.
