The Minister for Information, Hon Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says the government is yet to meet with telecommunications network operators to discuss about a possible reduction in charges on momo transactions.
According to him this is to reduce the impact of the tax on the taxpayer.
Speaking in an interview observed by the Informant Online on Peace FM with Kwame Sefa Kayi, the Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi explained that telecommunications network operators charge high fee on momo transactions without providing developments in the country.
"The telecommunications network operators charge 2% and take the money to their countries.  They do not construct roads for us, they do not recruit Ghanaian youth into police, soldier but take 2% to their countries.
Ghana government needs money to recruit Ghanaian Youth into police, soldier etc. Build schools, hospitals that is why we are charging 1.75%. So if possible they should reduce their 2%. what this means is that more money will remain in the country.  So if the government maintains the 1.75% and the telecos  reduce theirs by .25% the outcome is that the consumer charge reduces by .25% and  the money goes to the government who will use it for projects for you and i" he said.
When asked that the telecommunications network operators can argue that they pay tax to the government and so why must they reduce they fees , he said the government will not compel them to reduce their fees.
" It is not a force. We are discussing with them as inflation has risen high around the world. Prices of goods and services in the USA and the UK have gone up. So government needs money to develop Ghana"
Hon Kojo Oppong Nkrumah revealed that the government with the Minority is engaging the network providers.
This new development comes after an earlier report that government has reduced the E-levy from 1.75 to 1.5% .
