Liverpool have been linked with a move for Porto winger Luis Diaz, whom Jurgen Klopp is said to admire. The January transfer window is just a few weeks away.
Both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are scheduled to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations in January, and Klopp is desperate to bring in a replacement to assist bear the attacking burden in their absence.
According to reports in Portugal, the German coach is mulling a January bid for Diaz, though Liverpool would want to pay a fraction of his 80 million euro release clause. Porto had previously been adamant about this, but it is now believed that they have lowered their demands. In the Champions League this season, Klopp and Liverpool were able to have a close look at the 24-year-old, and it appears the Porto forward passed his auditions against the Reds. Diaz has 12 goals in 19 games for Porto in all competitions this season, including five in his past three Liga Bwin outings. While Salah and Mane are on international duty, Liverpool will need that kind of proven firepower to keep up with Manchester City and Chelsea.
This is a signing that would appear to make a lot of sense for Liverpool if the teams can agree on a fee. They certainly need another attacker to get them through the first half of 2022, and Diogo Jota has shown that even when Mane, Salah, and Roberto Firmino are all available, there are minutes to be had in the Liverpool attack. Diaz, who is only 24, should still have his best years ahead of him and would be a long-term investment as well as short-term cover. Liverpool's depth would be bolstered by the addition of a player of his calibre, and their title chances would be strengthened.
