In a defamation case against Mona Gucci, an Accra High Court has awarded Yvonne Nelson GHS500,000 for malicious statements she made on Accra-based Neat Fm about the award-winning actress.
Mona, a socialite and TV host, was not present in court when the verdict was handed down.
Mona was ordered to pay GH500,000 to Yvonne and apologise for her defamatory publication about the famed actress by the court, which was presided over by Justice John Eugene Nyante Nyandu.
She has also been prohibited from making any other disrespectful remarks regarding the actress.
According to Yvonne, a "slay queen" is a lady with dirty morals who engages in prostitution and other illegal acts for a living under the guise of legitimacy.
Yvonne was portrayed as a deviant figure who engaged in unethical and illegal behaviors, according to the statement. Yvonne's lawyer wrote to Mona to retract and apologize for her defamatory statement.
Mona named a lengthy list of Ghanaian female media and social personalities in an interview with Neat FM, a subsidiary of the Despite Media Group, in May 2020, and alluded to them with the vague moniker "slay queen." Mona publicly mentions the actress's name among a group of persons she refers to as "slay queens" in the interview.
"Yvonne doesn't show off, but she is a slay queen because you know the slay queen it entails a lot. We have both showing off and some contacts. And people who we know that the things you do and the lifestyle you exhibit, someone is paying for you behind the scenes," Mona remarked.
When Yvonne's lawyer asked her to retract her comments and apologize, she refused and instead went on a social media rant, spewing even more derogatory remarks.
Yvonne then proceeded to sue her in order to resolve the situation.
Mona did not appear in court during the proceedings.
