Member of Parliament for Manhyia South constituency and Minister of Energy, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has revealed that he will lead the people of the Ashanti Region in a protest if a budget allocation is made for the construction of the Keta sea defense project.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM's Ekosiisen hosted by Osei Bonsu(OB), the Member of Parliament indicated that the NDC during their 8-year tenure in office under late President Mills and John Mahama did nothing about Keta sea defense project even though funds were allocated for the project under President Kuffour.
"Budgets are national business documents for a year that cannot eradicate all our problems in just a day", he said.
He explained that other Ghanaians need help and so forcing the government to address the needs of only the people of Keta will amount to sharing the national cake unfairly.
Dr. Prempeh cited the recent flood victims who were displaced in areas like Atasemanso, TUC etc. in Kumasi as an example and indicated that the flood occurred at a time of the budget drafting but there was no allocation whatsoever for them.
Again the MP alluded to the fact that, residents of Kumasi and it's environs have been experiencing power outages for some months but all this were not catered for because budgets don't come to solve all our problems in a day.
He added that the minority shouldn't use the sea defense project as a bait and hang it around the neck of the finance minister to compulsorily inculcate it into the 2022 budget even though he supports the idea of building the Keta sea defense to protect the community and people in the region.
Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh again reiterated the point that the finance minister should be given a free hand to operate and make a decision whether there are funds to complete the project.
