John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills, 3rd President of the 4th Republic of Ghana died on 24 July, 2012 at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra and he happens to be the only Ghanaian President to die in office. He died from complications of a massive hemorrhagic stroke resulting from brain aneurysm.
The late President was battling sicknesses including throat cancer while in office and would go abroad on a regular basis for medical checkups. In his last public speech at the Kotoka International Airport, late President Mills gave an account of what he had been up to in the United States. He stated that he went there to undertake a regular medical checkup as recommended by his doctors in Ghana. The late President continued by saying that he had been cleared by his doctors and is fit to continue his role as President of Ghana and urged all citizens to work together.
Although the late President said he was okay, you could tell from his shaking voice that he was really sick and needed a break from his work but he selflessly continued his work until he passed on 24 July 2012, 3 days after his 68th birthday.
A 3 day state funeral was organised from 8 to 10 August 2012 to mourn the passing of our peaceful leader. His remains were laid to rest at the Asomdwee Park in Accra.
