On December 12, 2021, the Paramount Chief of the Asantes, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II formally launches his Commemorative Gold Coin in the upcoming Akwasidae festival.
According to sources, the Commemorative Gold Coin is a suitable tribute to the Asantehene for his role in bringing peace to the Dagbon kingdom in Ghana's Northern Region following a lengthy Chieftaincy dispute between two parties of the royal dynasty.
The picture of Otumfuo appears on the front of the Gold Coin, along with the Adinkra symbols "Bi Nka Bi" on the left and "Mpatapo" on the right. These symbols represent peace, harmony, and reconciliation.
The Golden Stool of Asanteman, also referred to in Twi as "Sikadwa Kofi," is depicted on the reverse of the Gold Coin.
According to legend, the Golden Stool, the Asante Kingdom's most valued asset and symbol of the Asantes' soul, was plucked from the heavens by Okomfo Anokye who was a High Priest under the Kingship of Otumfuo Osei Tutu I, the first king of the Asantes.
The Bank of Ghana has approved the gold coin which will only be used to honour the king and not for lawful transactions.
