Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumbungu on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has chastised the Minority Leader for his stance on the controversial 1.75% E-levy in the government's 2022 budget statement.
Haruna Iddrisu's stance, according to Ras Mubarak, is what "makes the public feel NDC and NPP are the same."
Ras Mubarak's reaction comes on the back of the Minority Leader's suggestion that the E-levy rate be trimmed to one percent.
"We are not against it, but we want it fixed at one percent. We fear for double taxation because we already have the Communication Services Tax,†he said.
In a Facebook post, Ras Mubarak said the e-levy is unjustified and that all the monies that have entered the Finance Minister's coffers have not been utilized.
“In case the Minority Leader hasn’t been reading the Auditor General’s report, over 1.2billion cedis disappeared into thin air due to procurement irregularities and no one has been held responsible. There’s wanton dissipation of public funds and you want them to take more from the people albeit 1% and waste it as we’ve seen in 5years? This is nothing short of a betrayal of the people’s cause," he wrote.
He added that the NDC's constant change in position on matters is the reason why some citizens see the two big political parties in the country as the same.
Meanwhile, in a communique issued by the Minority Chief Whip and MP for Asawase, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, on Friday, December 3, the NDC caucus assured the citizenry that the NDC's position on the e-levy remains unchanged.
The NDC wants the e-levy which they describe as "draconian," scrapped.
