Suicide is one social phenomenon that has been neglected for the past decades. Attention to sucide has become neccessary due to rampant increase in victims, mostly the youth. The case of sucide is one of the leading causes of death in Ghana and it is so as a result of inadequate education.
Health experts have argue that sucide has many causes and are linked to intense pressure on an individual to meet life expectation or be labelled as a failure. Individuals who battle with chronic illnesses, betrayal by love ones, overdue on life accomplishments are more likely to commit suicide. In some societies, stigma is attached to issues concerning sucide and punishment is meted out to those who flout them. Men are naturally assumed by society perception not to show emotion of pain or disappointment as it is viewed as a weakness. The ability to deal with internal battles alone present opportunity for depression and desperation, especially among the youth, who feel the end of one's life ends all of life struggles.
To curb this menace, Ghana has established a Mental Health Board to help assist in creating awareness against suicide. Some health authorities who play an instrumental part in the fight against suicide are;
Ghana Health Service
Psychology Council
Mental Health Authority
Food and Drug Authority
Allied Health Professions Council
To be successful in the fight against sucide, Ghanaians are encouraged to show love to victims of depression and mentally disabled persons and report all cases of attempted sucide to appropriate authorities.
