When Liverpool signed Diogo Jota in the summer of 2020, the club had a shortlist of other potential options to consider in order to strengthen their attack.
Jonathan David has been linked with a move to Liverpool.
Gent's Jonathan David was on that list, but he ended up signing for Lille OSC instead for a fee reported to be in the region of £25 million.
Both players have since justified Liverpool's interest. Jota has thrived at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp, and he's currently on a good run of form, having scored four goals in his last three games.
David has also thrived at his new club, where he was used as part of a front two during his time in France. In Ligue 1 and the Champions League, he's scored 22 non-penalty goals in 3,923 minutes on the field, averaging one goal every two games.
His performances for Lille mirror his performances as a teenager in Belgium, where he first made a name for himself as an 18-year-old, scoring 30 non-penalty goals and registering 13 assists in all competitions over a two-year period at Gent.
With Liverpool looking to bolster their attack in the coming months, links to David have resurfaced, and given his upward trajectory, the risks associated with signing him are lower this time around.
The Canadian international is fast, strong, and two-footed. Thirteen of his 23 domestic goals for Lille have been scored with his right foot, nine with his left, and one with his head.
This summer, he will have three years left on his contract, putting his club in a strong negotiating position, but Lille's asking price is rumoured to be £30 million, which the Reds may consider reasonable.
David is currently being linked with Arsenal and Inter Milan, among other clubs. He is quickly becoming one of Europe's most sought-after strikers, and he could end up at Anfield in the near future.
