The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has placed a temporary prohibition on Ministers of State leaving the country.

This directive, which will be in effect for the next thirty days, also affects Deputy Ministers.

An Accra-based Asaase radio reports that, trips relating to medical emergency may be excluded from this order.

It is not yet clear what has necessitated this directive but unconfirmed reports indicate that it is due to the controversies surrounding the approval of the controversial 2022 government's budget statement and economic policy.

A similar directive was made in June 2018 after the President assumed office in January, 2017.

Ministers of state and MMDCEs were directed to stay in the country until they were ordered to travel.

“Guidelines in respect of future foreign travels aimed at minimizing disruption to Government’s domestic work will be communicated to you shortly,” parts of the 2018 directive read.
