Cristiano Ronaldo is now the club's best scorer in all competitions in his second stay at Manchester United. His initial tenure at Old Trafford finished with him being named the finest player in the world, but his move to Real Madrid was not without drama.
Ramon Calderon, the president of Real Madrid, had stated that Ronaldo will be a Real Madrid player in 2007. Sir Alex Ferguson, United's manager at the time, was enraged by Calderon's handling of the situation, especially since Ronaldo wanted to go as well.
Cristiano Ronaldo used to talk to Luis Nani and Anderson, according to Luis Nani.
Ferguson eventually calmed down and stated that if the appropriate deal came through, he would let Ronaldo go. Certainly, the Scot kept his word, and Ronaldo left the club in 2009. His final season, on the other hand, was not without its share of turbulence.
According to Luis Nani, Ronaldo's former teammate, the superstar would frequently speak with him and Anderson about his desire to leave United.
"We would stay after training to do competitions, and they [Anderson and Ronaldo] were my teammates," Nani explained. "Everyone has best friends or people with whom they feel more at ease, and they were my support."
Nani was taken aback by Ronaldo's sudden departure.
Nani also stated that Ronaldo has mentioned leaving several times. When the relocation finally happened in 2009, he was taken aback by how quickly it transpired. Ronaldo's departure was a significant blow to United, who had just won the triple in 2008.
On certain days, he [Ronaldo] would openly tell us, 'I've been here six or seven years now, and I think it's enough for me.' That was something he stated a few times. But it was always, 'I'll see, I'll see,' and we never imagined that [the Real Madrid move] would happen so quickly. He departed after we won the league the second year, but he had a fantastic season, so we were still astonished," Nani explained.
Things are different now since United isn't the top competitor it once was, but that might change soon thanks to Ralf Rangnick's skills and Ronaldo's goal-scoring exploits.
Do you think Ronaldo would leave United again if they fail to turn things around?
