Member of Parliament for the Tema West Constituency of the Greater Accra Region, Hon. Carlos Kingsley Ahenkora has told Ghanaians not to use electronic transaction platforms if they don't want to pay for the E-levy stated in the 2022 budget statement.

Speaking to TV3's Parliamentary correspondent, the former deputy trade and industry minister indicated that government was not forcing anybody to pay the e-levy.

"It is not a compulsory tax. If you don't do Mobile Money(MOMO) you don't pay. So if you don't want to pay don't do Momo, It's simple".

After the presentation of the 2022 budget statement by the Finance Minister on the floor of Parliament, some policies have received a huge public uproar particularly the electronic transaction levy, 15% surge in government fees and charges, increase in benchmark values, neglect of tidal wave disaster victims, Agyapa and Aker energy deals.

The 1.75% electronic transaction levy specifically has been a subject of debate for weeks now with majority of Ghanaians vehemently opposing the tax citing a double taxation on the already burdened taxpayer.

The minority side of Parliament and the opposition party have declared a zero tolerance for the e-levy and are calling for an outright removal of the proposed tax in the 2022 budget.

Government avers it will use the proceeds to fund infrastructure and create an entrepreneural society to avert the growing youth unemployment with a flagship program christened Youthstart.
